• Help new member to learn basic competencies of daily life.
Length: several days, up to two weeks
Arrival Breakdown
Here is a suggested program that your facilitator can work through with you – you may think of ideas and resources that apply to your specific situation as well!
- Money and banking
- Phone options – providers, security
- Some cultural do’s and don’ts (relationships, dress codes, etc.)
- Transportation options
- Contingency plan/security issues
- Daily life patterns/schedules/routines/expectations
- Shopping – for food, household items, etc.
- If applicable: childcare workers, house help, etc.
- Relationships within the community (i.e. introduction to local leadership, local fellowship, etc)
- Overview/Expectations of Inbound curriculum
- Review and discussion of VSP, MOU, CP plan
- Relationships with teammates/community
- Expectations of what team will look like, involvement, member care, etc.
- Scheduling: including One-on-one meetings, team day, events
- Roles of levels of leadership and facilitator
- Understand why we learn the lingua-culture of the people we work with
- Be oriented to the language learning method used in your area and to language helpers as needed (if none is recommended, LAMP is the preferred method because of its emphasis on relationship and it does not require trained teachers).
- Set initial language learning goals and take learner history

- Homestay: dates and expectations
- Schedule personal holidays.
